Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a leadership seminar held by our local SHRM chapter. The title of the seminar was “The Hero’s Journey”. I did not have any clue as to what this seminar would be about but I’m a self-improvement junkie and feel there is always room for improvement. To my delight, this was one seminar that totally blew me away.

The seminar was given by Jeff from SST Communications (www.sstcommunications.com). Jeff is a screen writer by trade and has been producing plays in order to educate people about different topics ranging from sexual harassment to recruiting.

The premise of the seminar was that leadership is very similar to the structure for a hero in a screenplay. This is brought to light in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero With a Thousand Faces”.

Here are some notes. These notes are by no means a representation of the entire scope of information presented.

Heroes are needed when an imbalance occurs

Room to improve… retention; compliance; quality; financial performance; growth

Heroes need a Call to Adventure

This is a NEED not a want

Heroes do not naturally want to go on the journey

Heroes do the necessary work, not necessarily the high profile work

Heroes get Supernatural Aid

This is a mentor, someone to assist them

Normally time for gifting of some type of token

Heroes will Cross a First Threshold

The point of no return for the hero

Heroes face Trials

Challenges of reaching the prize…

Heroes want The Prize

This is the identifiable “thing” that will bring balance back

Has to be very specific

Heroes want a Return

If there is no return, the effort put in by heroes will diminish

The prize should be public and sincere

This session got an A+ from me. If you hear about this seminar in your area, I highly recommend attending.
